Before 2021 hardware moved from the EU into the UK without a customs event. That is no longer true. UK buyers now face a full import entry with classification, duty where applicable and import VAT, which is recoverable for VAT-registered businesses through the normal mechanism provided the entry paperwork is correct. Postponed VAT accounting changes the cash-flow shape considerably and is worth arranging before a large order rather than during one.
The practical consequence is that an ex-works quote from an EU supplier is no longer comparable to a UK-delivered price. We price UK deals landed, which is the only honest way to compare two offers. The mechanics sit on the import and IOR desk.
